July 24, 2024: Calgary’s air quality has reached a “high risk” level due to ongoing wildfires in Alberta, which send smoke into the city and create hazy conditions.
Environment Canada issued an air quality advisory for Calgary at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, with the air quality index hitting level nine, a high-risk classification. The agency recommends that individuals with heart and lung conditions, children, and the elderly avoid strenuous outdoor activities and minimize outdoor exertion.
From Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning, Calgary’s air quality index worsened significantly, rising from seven to ten before stabilizing at nine. However, Environment Canada anticipates improvements throughout the day and into Thursday, with the index expected to drop to seven, still within the high-risk category. By Thursday morning, further progress is forecasted, with the index likely to fall to six, considered a moderate risk.
Take appropriate measures to safeguard their health during this period of poor air quality. For more details on the wildfires impacting Alberta, read about the Jasper wildfire.
