Alberta Government Boosts Support for Senior Housing with $20 Million Increase in Funding

June 4, 2024: Alberta’s government is reinforcing its commitment to the welfare of its elderly population through Budget 2024, which includes a significant funding increase to support low-income senior residents. A total of $60 million, a 55 percent increase from last year, is now allocated through the Lodge Assistance Program to enhance the Alberta seniors benefits. This initiative is pivotal for lodge operators who provide critical affordable housing under the Alberta seniors benefit framework.

Minister of Seniors, Community, and Social Services Jason Nixon emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating:

“Ensuring our seniors have access to safe, secure and affordable homes is not only a duty, but a moral imperative. Seniors are pillars of our communities, and they deserve our respect and support for the contributions they’ve made throughout their lives. Our government will continue to stand up for seniors and ensure that they are supported through our programs. Seniors lodges play an essential role in our housing system and empowering them to provide the services Albertans rely on is vital to supporting communities across our province.”

The Lodge Assistance Program, part of the broader Alberta seniors benefits initiative, aims to empower lodge operators to serve their residents better. This program is Alberta’s oldest social housing scheme, offering meals, housekeeping, and recreational activities to independent seniors. The enhanced funding ensures that these facilities can continue to provide excellent care and support, reinforcing Alberta seniors benefits.

Arlene Adamson, chief executive officer of Silvera for Seniors, expressed her gratitude:

“Silvera for Seniors is grateful for the Alberta government’s commitment to the Seniors Lodge Program. We believe the lodge program is essential, not only for offering affordable housing for low-income seniors but also for ensuring older adults are supported to live independently and not living in hospitals or long-term care facilities when all they need is supportive living. During a time of high inflation, the government’s additional funding through the Lodge Assistance Program is critical and appreciated.”

In further support of the Alberta seniors benefit, the government announced a review panel for seniors’ lodges in January. This panel aims to enhance the program’s effectiveness and sustainability. This panel is actively engaging with seniors and lodge providers to explore improvements and ensure the long-term viability of seniors’ lodges across the province.
