June 25, 2024: According to a recent provincial news release, Lethbridge College is set to become Alberta’s newest polytechnic institution. This redesignation will enable the college to offer a broader range of programs tailored to local needs, including degrees, diplomas, certificates, and apprenticeship education. Additionally, the change will enhance the institution’s ability to provide more hands-on, career-focused education.
“This move is far more than a name change,” stated Lethbridge Mayor Blaine Hyggen. “It signifies the continual adaptation, growth, and grand vision for one of our city’s beloved post-secondary institutions.”
Michael Marcotte, chair of Lethbridge College, reflected on the effort behind this transition. “We’ve been working on this for about five years,” he said. “To finally get here today, it’s a great day for Lethbridge College and a great day for our continued story of success.”
The institution will officially adopt the name “Lethbridge Polytechnic” on September 3. Although Lethbridge College has been a cornerstone of the community since 1957, it began offering degree programs in 2015.
Alberta’s Minister of Advanced Education, Rajan Sawhney, emphasized the significance of the redesignation. “This institution has unlocked opportunities for students to pursue education close to home while developing skills needed to succeed in the economy of tomorrow.”
With this change, southern Alberta will now boast a university, a college, a First Nation college, and a polytechnic institution, providing students with various post-secondary education options and reducing the need for long-distance travel.
